It seems like the holidays are always the most hectic time of year, especially Christmas. With so many business and family events to attend or plan for, it can be very stressful. The holidays can also be a time of year that is painful for someone may be mourning a loved one, or a family might be dealing with a shift in the home and learning to handle extra pressures.

Take a Deep Breath and Focus on What Matters

This year and going into the new year, I urge everyone to take a deep breath, relax, and remember what’s most important to you. There is always something that drives people into crazy mode, such as making sure they have the right presents for everyone or that the house—inside and outside—is decorated at its best. Then there are certain family members who may not always get along with others, which may include extended family, the in-laws, and deciding which house to visit each year. Christmas is one of the most joyous and exciting times of the year, but for some, it can also be the most stressful.

Create New Traditions to Relieve Stress

May I suggest that if you are struggling with the holidays and aren’t sure what to do, try making a new tradition. Perhaps organize a game, such as a scavenger hunt, or even volunteer somewhere for Christmas. This could also be a great time to really allow yourself to let go of some concerns and move forward. Maybe let your mother-in-law, father-in-law, or other family members take the lead in hosting or presenting gifts.

The Stress of Last-Minute Holiday Shopping

Many people race around shopping for presents at the last minute, causing themselves to become stressed and upset. To avoid this next year, I recommend starting your holiday shopping right after Halloween or Thanksgiving. You can also take advantage of early sales and deals. The holidays are meant to be fun, full of cheer, and an opportunity to spend time with loved ones while appreciating the moments you share together.

The Struggles Many Face During the Holidays

Every year, we see people rushing around trying to find that one present they must get, fighting over what sweater to wear, or debating which holiday event to attend. Others may feel the desire to skip the holiday altogether and hide out away from everyone. One issue that has become more common is that many families are unable to afford a holiday meal or presents. With rising costs, this weighs heavily on parents and loved ones, leading to stress and even depression over not being able to afford gifts or a holiday feast.

Mental Health Challenges During the Holidays

Along with financial stress, mental health issues such as anxiety often rise during the holidays. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed by the noise, glittering lights, and constant events happening around town. It is a very hectic time of year, as you all know, which is why I can’t stress enough to relax, breathe, and seek help if needed during these times. Remember that even in our darkest hour, we are all entitled to enjoy the holidays with our loved ones, and everything will be okay.

Make Time for Community and Self-Care

Make sure to check out a Christmas play at a local church or community theatre and explore what’s happening in your community. Yes, I know it’s easier said than done, especially when you have to find the time to visit family and relatives all in one day. But taking time for yourself and connecting with your community can be uplifting.

Avoid the Health Risks of Stress

Dealing with stress is not healthy, and going through it during the holidays can negatively affect your health, leading to risks like stroke or heart attack. I strongly advise you to take time for yourself and enjoy the holiday season with your loved ones. I know some of you may think that it’s better to do everything yourself or that it will never get done, but that’s when unhealthy stress builds up, and you end up overwhelmed trying to make everything perfect.

Relax and Enjoy the Holidays

It’s always better when you have help with holiday preparations—whether it’s decorating, cooking, baking, or wrapping gifts. It also helps to reduce stress by getting out and having fun. Participate in community events, go ice skating, visit a holiday market, or simply enjoy other seasonal activities.

I hope this advice has been somewhat helpful. Remember to take time for yourself, breathe, get plenty of sleep, and allow yourself to accept help with everything.
